You know how people hype stuff on the gram and you’re like ‘this is a bucket list activity and I’m definitely doing this’ but then you tick it off the list and wonder what the hype was all about, well that was how the Giraffe Center was for me. I had seen a lot of photos on the gram and I sure wasn’t getting out of Nairobi without heading there.
The Giraffe Center is located on Duma Road close to the Giraffe Manor on the outskirts of Nairobi. It will take you about one hour traffic free drive to get to the Giraffe Center from the City Center.
The Giraffe Center for me was a 5/10 as there was really nothing more to do there than feed Giraffes. To be fair there are a bit of educational materials there about Giraffes, the different species if that’s the right word and some graphical illustrations, where to find giraffes in Kenya, history, range and habitat but how exciting can that be ?.
I got some food for the Giraffes fed them and I also did the instagram ritual?.Y’all know what it is. I kissed a Giraffe and a liked it ? ?? That sounded wrong right ?. Well I fed one with my mouth but what the photos on the gram don’t tell you is that you have to watch out and be careful of headbutts by the Giraffes which is potentially painful and which comes in sporadically.
To be safe and avoid injuries, the Giraffes have long tongues so you can easily drop the snack like food on their tongues. The fact that the food is available and you don’t have to buy it is a plus for the Giraffe Center in Nairobi. I also fed Giraffes at the Lion Park in Johannesburg which I blogged about here and the food was sold to tourists. Rip off yeah?
There’s a Giraffe shop at the Giraffe Center for Giraffe themed gift items such as stuffed bears key rings and a host of others so feel free to get some items if you want. I thought they were however overpriced so unless you have some cute little nices or nephews who would like a stuffed animal, you can pass.
I went by taxi to the Giraffe Center and can’t really remember how much it costed. I was at the Giraffe Center with my Kenyan friend and Couchsurfing Buddy Rollins and once again I paid local price ? – 250ksh, foreigners on the other hand pay 1,000ksh ?
